Description
This small park located under the oak trees is situated about midway along the Town Boardwalk off Front Street. The park is used for various events including the Beaufort Business Association’s free “Rock the Dock” Music Series on Thursday evenings. It is also home to Santa’s workshop during the holiday season and is a frequent registration point for numerous 5K runs.
There are multiple benches in the shade of the oaks which offer a quiet spot for enjoying a break in the downtown area.
The park is named in honor of the late John G. Newton, oceanographer and marine superintendent at Duke University Marine Laboratory. He led the successful search for the ironclad U.S.S. Monitor.
The John G. Newton Historical Marker historical marker located in the park was dedicated on the 140th anniversary of the Battle of the Ironclads March 9, 2002.
